Found this on one of the geekier sites I hang out on. New idea to help children to learn to ride. It's a weighted disc inside the wheel that gives them more stability.

Good idea or just a solution for which there isn't really a problem?

a solution for which there isnt really a problem

get them scooting for an hour, then re-introduce pedals and watch them go.

darn sight cheaper I'd have thought

I saw this in the Metro today.

I would like to see some testing done on it to see how well it teaches kids to ride unaided without it.

My opinion & gut reaction is that although it gets them riding without stabilisers quickly, it also introduces a dependance on it. If you don't fall off, you don't learn how far you can lean over and what to do to correct it.

I remember taking my kids to the local school playground to teach the eldest to cycle and the youngest was still in his pushchair. There was a slope down which my eldest went flying and I took off after him having let go of the pram! Then I realised I wasn't going to catch the bike before it hit the rails at the bottom of the playground but equally was too far from the pram which had careered out of control on two wheels headed for the grass verge! I had to watch and hope neither of them were hurt as they crashed helplessly with their equally helpless dad looking gormless in the middle of them!
