Sounds like your chat went a whole lot better than mine did today with a coach driver. I was cycling through this road hump
Perowne Way , i didnt use the cycle lane bit because it was full of glass etc and this coach driver tries to overtake me going through it. He sounds his horn etc and basically forces me off my bike. A couple of pedestrians are walking by see the whole thing say how disgusted they are with how the coach behaved. Anyway i caught up with him further down the road he had stopped to pick people up. So i taps on his window asks what the score is and he goes" cyclists are supposed to get over to the left" I says actually i dont have too and the lane is full of glass. He then goes into a rant saying im a ***king ***hole etc etc well i wasnt in the mood. I got off my bike marched onto the coach and explained to him in no uncertain terms filled with various expletives that his boss would be hearing about this and plod. I then cycled back got the names and addresses of the two pedestrians and we shall see where it goes from there.
A couple of weeks ago I had to deal with a similar person. I was riding downtown during our 3 day "Taste of Pinellas" event. The bike lane/cycle track runs alongside of on street parking. And pretty much every spot had a car in it. Logically whenever I see any car in the on street parking I do
NOT ride in the bike lane. As has been noted it seems like most people have window tint that is probably darker than is allowed by law. So I/we have no way of knowing if there is anyone in the car or not. So I always approach parked cars as if there was someone jackass in the car waiting to open the door.
Anyway this person has gotten out of their car and was waiting to cross the street. As I was riding in the travel lane I stopped so as to let him cross. This is when he starts to lecture me about riding in the bike lane/cycle tracks. Citing that "they paint them, so we should use them." When I tried to explain to him that with the cars parked alongside of the bike lane that it was too dangerous to do so. I had even politely asked him to open his door so that he could see how far out into the bike lane/cycle track it went. His response to my safety concern is/was that I was a ****ing peanut.
The real irony is that on this road there is only a bike lane/cycle track on one side of the road, but there is on street parking on both sides.
