Short lane

I can beat that, haven't got a pic yet though. I'll upload one as soon as I can.

From my own personal experience and not wanting to re-iterate what has been said in previous threads...

  • Cycle paths are often designed with out the cyclist in mind such as bus stops and other street furniture bang in the middle..
  • Most pedestrians assume those cycle paths next to pavements are for the sole purpose of walking on
  • Unlike cars, pedestrians are not that predictable, they can turn almost on a sixpence; at least a car has a turning circle, had more accidents on a cycle path through a park than on the main roads!
So whilst I do use a couple of cycle paths I generally stick to the road

We have the same problem with bike lanes/cycle paths on this side of the pound, i.e. bike lanes/cycle paths that are installed with little to no input from the cyclists who use them. And then motorists get upset that we don't use them.

Uh, if they installed them so that they are safe and intelligently installed we'd use them. But if they're unsafe we are not going to use them. How hard is that to understand?

Think it is more of a recommendation? But I agree with it, I'm wouldn't want to be flying around peds at 20+mph any more than they'd want me doing it...

Exactly, a few years ago I had a conversation with a gal who didn't think that we cyclists belonged on the road because drivers are trying to get goods from one point to another and cyclists just "get in the way" of that.

I pointed out that we cyclists are trying to do the same. She was also of the opinion that we don't pay our "fair share" of the road use.

What's with the "crooked" lines?
Either side of a pedestrian crossing. basically states 'no parking'

We have similar, but yellow, outside schools. Once again means 'no parking/stopping' but inthat case you'll always find some ignorant parent ignores it and there's guaranteed to be no copper about.

That's quite a reasonable cycle track, not a silly one.

It's part of the cycle track that comes from behind on the other side of the road, across the crossing, back a little bit (the visible segment), then across the grass to the housing estate on the left.
There are enough carp cycle tracks that you don't have to carefully arrange what's visible in streetview to make one look bad.

I had a "chat" with a motorist the other evening when i was riding my fixed passed not only the painted lines that were supposed to be "our lane" but also the worst pot holes and basic un-kept piece of tarmac near where i work (i don't even drive a car over them because it is that rough).Anyway he passed peeping his horn and waving his little arms only for me to catch him up at the next piece of congestion caused by motorist's,i asked whats up in a nice polite manner and he explained about where i was in the road "holding him up LOL" to which i replied it's as rough as a bears arse and i would'nt even drive a car over it to which he said sorry ! Result and all were happy chappies....still beat him through the jams though !

Sounds like your chat went a whole lot better than mine did today with a coach driver. I was cycling through this road hump Perowne Way , i didnt use the cycle lane bit because it was full of glass etc and this coach driver tries to overtake me going through it. He sounds his horn etc and basically forces me off my bike. A couple of pedestrians are walking by see the whole thing say how disgusted they are with how the coach behaved. Anyway i caught up with him further down the road he had stopped to pick people up. So i taps on his window asks what the score is and he goes" cyclists are supposed to get over to the left" I says actually i dont have too and the lane is full of glass. He then goes into a rant saying im a ***king ***hole etc etc well i wasnt in the mood. I got off my bike marched onto the coach and explained to him in no uncertain terms filled with various expletives that his boss would be hearing about this and plod. I then cycled back got the names and addresses of the two pedestrians and we shall see where it goes from there.

Okay, thank you for the explanation. After seeing a number of y'all's streets with those crooked lines I was wondering what it meant. Again, thank you for explaining it.

A couple of weeks ago I had to deal with a similar person. I was riding downtown during our 3 day "Taste of Pinellas" event. The bike lane/cycle track runs alongside of on street parking. And pretty much every spot had a car in it. Logically whenever I see any car in the on street parking I do NOT ride in the bike lane. As has been noted it seems like most people have window tint that is probably darker than is allowed by law. So I/we have no way of knowing if there is anyone in the car or not. So I always approach parked cars as if there was someone jackass in the car waiting to open the door.

Anyway this person has gotten out of their car and was waiting to cross the street. As I was riding in the travel lane I stopped so as to let him cross. This is when he starts to lecture me about riding in the bike lane/cycle tracks. Citing that "they paint them, so we should use them." When I tried to explain to him that with the cars parked alongside of the bike lane that it was too dangerous to do so. I had even politely asked him to open his door so that he could see how far out into the bike lane/cycle track it went. His response to my safety concern is/was that I was a ****ing peanut.

The real irony is that on this road there is only a bike lane/cycle track on one side of the road, but there is on street parking on both sides.
