The TeenOne, a very bright boy, IQ somewhere off the scale - But common sense..? N'ah!!
Get a phone call yesterday morning that he's had a puncture on his MTB (His first ever!!) he's only a 1/4 mile from where he going so will walk, but can I pick him & the bike up 14.30.
I told him yes, I aslo told him to nip into Halfords while on his break & grab an inner tube, he asked what size he needed, told him thought he had 26", but to check on the tyre.
So after tea he asks me if i'll help him do his tyre ( I was washing up so told him to go start, get wheel off & i'd be there in a few mins)
I arrived at the garage to find a confused & stressed son, he'd got the wheel off, tyre too, but was confused why the inner tube he had bought was so much smaller then the one he'd just taken off...
I looked at the new tube, I looked at the box it had been in 20x1.75....??
I was thinking of ways to tactfully say he'd bought the wrong tube, he doesn't take critiscim well!!
He angrily told me it was my fault, he'd measure the wheel like i'd said..? It was 10" from centre to rim so he'd bought 20" tubes!!
D'uh!!
Oh well, i'm now prepared for any punctures bubba#3 may get

Seriously though... there are so many differing sizes of innertube nowadays, I still have to check each time I get one for any of my bikes as I can never remember what each one takes.

GF's eldest has had the back wheel off his bike now for 2 weeks with his first flat. I tried to help him the afternoon he had his rapid tyre deflation incident but as I was cooking I just got all the tools he'd need for him (levers, pump, repair kit) and offered him advise as and when he asked.


There are about 2 holes from thorns but he wants to repair both holes at the same time. I suggested he repaired one at a time but he didn't want to do that. Much expletives and throwing of bits of his bike later has now been blocking our, rather full of junk, garage for those 2 weeks. I have to lift it out if I want anything. I keep asking him when he's going to fix it and he's now told me Friday (he's off work today but had to go out). He says he's going to buy a new tube and throw the old one away. Bike is only 2 months old so tube should be repairable. I wonder what size tube he'll come back with? It should be 700 x 40 for his Giant hybrid I think. I told him, he needs to get himself a pump, levers and spare tube to take out with him, when he got the bike. He ended up with a 3 mile walk home

As to replacing tubes rather than repairing them, I now do the same. Too many failed patches* and being able to afford it make it a viable option for me.

* I've had the patches peel off** after 3 minutes, 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months and 3 years. The latter is probably acceptable but I want to ride not repair and the others aren't.

** Yes I know they shouldn't and when I was a kid, 50 years ago, they stayed on without an issue but these days I can't seem to get any to work and I've tried 'em all! Eihter the materials have changed or I'm entering senility.

Guitarpete... Two days moving it has been enough for me - I've bought him thre tubes he needs, i'll do it today - will I get any thanks? Doubt it!

Bygad... I have my tinted glasses bcak at last YAY!! I keep leaving them at work, it's not too bad when only overnight but a whole week without them Eeek! I'm getting a pare pair to keep by my PC at all times lol
And I too remeber fixing punctures as a kid, they'd last forever, ok got another fresh puncture a week later but the patches always stuck - I've given up reparing them now, on the plus side I have found so mnay use for parts of old inner tubes cut up

The idiots (and me ) at Evans got two spare tubes for my wife's hybrid (at the same time as we bought the bike) - I didn't think to check the valves - not until I got home anyway, they'd given me presta, when she has schrider.... doh. It's a 20 mile round trip to take them back, so didn't bother.

I lost the schreader adapter for my pump, popped into Halfords as i was passing & bought a new one, then thought best get a couple of other bits, My youngest son was being a bit of a pickle so the lad behind the counter got everyhting for me, I paid & off we went. Once home I just put the whole acrrier bag into my pannier, apart from taking the adapter out the rest stayed in my bag for over a year never used. Then came the day that my back wheel went pop - There's only so much puncture proof tyres can take I suppose!
So there I was 30 miles from nowhere, but chuffed that once upon a time I prepared for such an event, got all my tools out the saddle bag, then rumaged for the orange Halfords bag - I was far from impressed to find the gimp had put in Presta inner tubes

Letting a gimp in halfords select your cycling bits is a bit like asking a pcworld monkey for computer advice.
Except that the halfords guys can sometimes be cyclists and know what they're looking for.

You've also got to remember the required length of valve stem, especially after buying new deep rimmed wheels.

2 spare tubes with valves too short to allow the pump to attach = 4 mile walk home (and a whole boat-load of swearing).

Sounds like me aged 14 IQ 156.

I can do rocket science and design electric cars but can't fill in a form to get JSA, or even my expenses from work.
If I am sent to carry out a task I need very specific instructions that account for everything otherwise I will only do what the flawed instructions tell me.
