Halfords and ebike repairs

Just been in Halfords (yes - I know) as I needed some gloves and the local LBS's don't bother selling them anymore

anyway - while I was there I noticed a notice on the counter saying that they have a new Policy

They no longer repair any ebike except Halfords ebikes

they will, apparently, replace tyres and tubes - but even then only if only the wheel itself is brought in

I presume it is a "ebike fire" sort of thing

but I thought the "New Policy" might be worth sharing around

also - no idea if this is just thins shop (Widnes) or country wide - it didn;t say!

Even removing the rear wheel can be a tiresome nightmare on many ebikes, and range of proprietary tools etc required must be vast. Stick to what you know rather than wasting staff time, and therefore money, trying to figure out what you dont.

Came up at my FLBS with a chap wanting an inner tube fitted. Halfords would not take it on because ‘not Halfords ebike’. Shop didn’t take it on because chap did not want to pay for the time it would take to do the job. Had problems believing the back wheel arrangement couldn’t ‘just’ be taken off the frame and the tube changed over.

Good afternoon,

As well as what @Drago says my limited experience of e-bikes shows them to have parts that are easy to damage.

Leaving any shop open to It worked when I brought it in before you did ……

Drat I have just bent a pin in the motor/battery connector, so let’s take it to the shop for a tyre replacement and blame them when they can’t reconnect the motor. Hoping that they didn’t notice the problem when I brought it in.

Not really surprising because of the variety of motors, batteries, head units etc etc. Just from reading on here I've come to appreciate that.

It's not unreasonable to take an ordinary bike to someone advertising as a mechanic, say "fix this please" and expect them to be able to sort most things out. Not everything, but most. But I don't think the same is true of e-bikes.

A decent shop would test the bike before working on it.

That would not stop the customer saying that the bike was fine when they handed it in if they were so inclined.

Of course not, but whatever the outcome I'd imagine that customer would get banned from the shop for any future business.

That's fine, I have a policy also if not taking any bike to Halfords for repair :okay:

It's going to be because of illegal eBikes and motorbikes, not that it's likely most of those are going to see the right end of a spanner anyway. I suspect most LBSs will just laugh those out the shop if brought in, Halfords have just made it official.

You are more than likely correct, but, Halfords do sell e-scooters, with a disclaimer in very small print, that they cannot be used in public places, or, words to that effect.
