Having been looking or some new wheels for a while I am leaning towards some handbuilts.

I currently have 32 spoke mavic open pros with 105 hubs.

Like everyone i want a balance of lightness, stiffness and strength. I weigh 100-110 kgs so whilst i want reasonably lightweight wheels i need durable ones as well.

Which rims would people recommend? Pricewise i would be looking at around £300.

I have seen these on sale at Planet X
http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/WBAMEXC/ambrosio-excellence-handbuilt-wheelset

Would these be suitable for my weight? They are 11 speed compatible which is good as i run Rival 22.

any ideas & suggestions welcome.

Personally I would find a good wheel builder and tell them your requirements ...

They look ok to me. I haven't built with Ambrosio Excellence but I have with other Ambrosio rims and they are very good. The Ultegra hubs are very good too.

I recently built wheels for two CC members that were 110+ kg - you can see them following the link on my signature. They have Archetype H Plus Son rims and 105 shimano hubs.... I think the rims are better than the Ambrosio rims though.

If you like the planet x wheels I think you'll be fine with them too.

EDIT: Looking at some prices and at that price they are a bargain. I'd go for it and be quick as it's the last set ^_^

I have 105 hubs with open pro 36spoke from Harry rowland.

Paid about £250. Done 3000miles in about 18 months and they're still true.

open pro 36 spoke on Ultegra, by Harry

6000 miles in 3 years

spoke broke the other day - i suspect it was damaged a while ago when chain dropped off and jammed against the cassette - even with the broken spoke the wheel was almost true

I only went for 105 on Harry's suggestion. Ultegra has alloy free hub and Harry suggested at my weight if put too much force through it and would damage it. 105 has steel free hub so is heavier but more durable.
