Not thought about the lights, what do you do with them?!! Also have to work out if the bag will fit the front of the bike with all the wires as it's going onto my road bike - pictured in profile

My Altura Skye (apparently no longer available) has a pastic/rubber thingy on the front-facing pocket on which to clip a light, but not sure how widespread this idea is (my rack-top rear bag has something similar).

The Kick-Fix attachment holds the bag reasonably well away from the handlebars and cabling on my drop-handlebar tourer.

You could try the forks if you are not using front panniers.
Its pretty easy to rig up a flasher somewhere even if you are using front panniers, the problem is if you want to use a light to see by.. some inventiveness may be required here.
Perhaps a helmet mounted light ?
I once riveted a light mount to the R/H side of a barbag, but this would only work on a bag with plastic inserts in the build to keep its shape.

This is my solution to the light problem, it's a rubber door stop fitted to the low rider boss. you could also use a head torch around the handle bar bag

By the way my bag fits inside the cables with no problems and I have interrupter levers fitted

We put my Ortlieb barbag on the extension mounting set to get around the issues with the cables. It has been in place for 14,000km without
issue. Surprisingly secure, though a touch difficult to line everything up when it first went on (needed a flat headed screw driver to prise a little bit of plastic outwards to slot things together), but more than happy with it.

Also if you go with the Ortlieb barbag (Ultimate 5) treat yourself to the 'plus' model. It has some really handy zipper pockets on the outside - think tissues and polos or just lose change. So much easier.

A MASSIVE “PLUS ONE” for the Vaude/Edinburgh one – superb bit of kit and not too big at all. Agreed about the lack of waterproofness and it did get very damp on one tour in NZ even with the cover on. But I would not be without it. The map holder is fantastic

Next time if I cycle in the rain I will have proper plastic bag, and also I always keep phone/camera/passport etc in an Alpkit lightweight drybag like these http://www.alpkit.com/shop/cart.php?target=product&product_id=16316&category_id=250

would this bar bag fit on a dawes karakum as it has butterfly handle bars.
I've not tried it, but I'd think it would be a bit of a squeeze.

It would depend on where you have brakes and gear shifters, as the bracket clamps on the bars either side of stem.

Try posting in Touring & Expeditions to see if anyone has this set-up.

My wife got me an Ortlieb Ultimate for carrying my camera. (Nice of her because it was bloody expensive!) The map pocket is an optional extra. Like all Orlieb stuff the quality is great and I have no qualms about carrying an SLR and lenses in it. One snag is that you can't use a normal handlebar mounted light with the bag - the top of the bag would be in the way of the beam.

You could use one of these:

There is another version with a longer bar for a couple of lights, or gsm etc. It should work on any Rixen kaul clickfit handlebar mount: Ortlieb, carradice and altura are the obvious ones.
