I wrapped my bars twice to get some cush (and to cover up the first layer of flouro pink when I went off it!). There used to be foam grips available, made by Grab-On and then there is the modern option of gel pads which are installed at high pressure points under the bar tape.

Coincidently, I thought just yesterday that my bar tape might need replacing.

Then I realised I was wearing summer mitts for the first time this year and that the bars probably just felt different and I'd get used to it again....

...or I needed new mitts... or new bar tape!

I wrap my bars with a single layer of old innertube and then bar tape over that.

I've got Spesh gel inserts then one layer of thin crap tape I bought at a jumble then another layer of Spesh Bar Phat. I do have massive hands though, so I get away with it, and the extra comfort is fantastic.

some bars are thicker,
No they aren't, although they may vary in size at the point where the stem clamps them, the area under the bar tape is the same diameter on every drop handlebar bike you have ever seen.

Mike Burrows tip for neat ending of bar tape, BTW. Before you start taping, cut a length (inch or so) of old inner tube and roll it onto the bars to sit at the stem. Tape bars, then roll inner tube section over the bit at the start to hold it. Much neater and long lasting than sticky tape.
