The French Pres, who I must admit to knowing sod all about, has gone down in my estimation with this.

I've always thought folk who play handshake games like the over-firm or over-assertive one right old insecure jerks.

Just shake the person's hand and get on with it.

Or maybe my ire has been sparked because I'm a limp wristed so and so.

Through my job I've had to shake hands with perhaps more people than usual. Firm but not vice like, not too long not too short, 1 second is all it needs.. Limp handshakes always leave me feeling slightly ...meh.

This is a domineering and patronising power gesture because it forces the other person to proffer their hand palm-up which is a gesture of supplication. Apparently the way to deal with it is to place your own hand palm down on top of the other person's hand, which will make them feel really upset though they won't understand why.

I want to try it on my loud boorish domineering boss one day. Maybe next time.

My experience "handshake" tactics is from some folk with a sales background. A high pressure job with, quite often, a fair amount of backbiting and power games. Almost guaranteed to introduce insecurities into even the most stable/assured.

I've only had to employ that once, some big man mate of a mate who had decided he was the alpha male on a lads night out. He chose not to have anything to do with me for the rest of the night.

I was once on a BMW training course and they were doing a bit of customer facing coaching, they said to always shake hands...... except for one guy on the course that had the limpest hand shake, like handing someone a wet kipper, they told him never to shake hands with anyone, ever again, poor guy.
