Happy to be soaked...

Every Monday I ride about 10 miles across the Malvern Hills to do some voluntary work. It was misty, wet and cold this morning. The bicycles were hanging behind a pair of comfortable, warm, dry cars. Massive dilemma.... Do I drive?

I went for the geared road bike. All the way up the Malverns I was regretting the choice. There were rivers along the roadside and heavy rain. Cars were passing a tad closer than I'd have invited them to.

On descents, regret turned into controlled terror. There's a section where the ShellGrip has worn away in patches on a sharp downhill bend. A Transit was sitting on my rear tyre as I held the centre of the lane at 25mph, wishing I had the courage to brake down to 15 but fearing a bump from behind.

I was amazed on arriving to see that I'd hit 38mph somewhere.... I felt way too scared to do that. In a puerile way, I was pleased with myself.

It was more of the same on the way home. Worried on the climbs, scared witless on the descents and being whipped past by drivers who can have had little idea of how the road appeared through my eyes.

(It was in many ways evocative of my wetter days as a motorcycle courier, splashing up the Cromwell Road with my visor lifted to prevent misting. Aaah.... Those were surely the days.)

Home now... toes warm and hot tea in belly.

Do I regret taking the bike? No.

Am I slightly cross about the drivers who tested my resolve with their intimate overtaking? No.

Do I feel way younger than I have any right to feel? I do.

Not something I want to do every day, but that was a fabulously intense 20-mile return trip.

Sir,

I have addressed the issue of your disappointment.

I fear my labours are wasted, as I sense there may be a degree of mockery involved.

However, I have addressed the issue nonetheless.

I know the feeling. Rode to work today, got very wet, loved it. Rode home after work, got very wet again, still loved it.

I had a similar ride today. SWMBO wanted some shopping so I went 10miles to get it for her. The rain had obviously set in for the afternoon so there was no point waiting. Lights on and off I went. A few close passes on the main road but I'm still here. Several cars had to wait behind me as I went through some roadworks but nobody screamed at me and nobody sounded their horn.

Got home and had a cuppa. Soaked, but so what?

I like early summer.

Apart from the spray in my eyes on the way home (still haven't got cycle glasses) I got soaked. Having to ride the hybrid this week since the roadie is in the shop, going is slow barely topping 30 on the smoother roads. Got home damp, cold but cheery and decided to still go to the gym and then do a bit more cycling.

Should get the roadie back tomorrow which will make everything feel better

Love it when it's lashing down and there is no wind. Makes for a strange ride. Somethig to do with everyone else running for cover while you are out there among the elements?

The weather isn't my worry at the moment, four months before my second biggest bike tour of my life and my fitness is in doubt yet again.I Knew it was too good to be true, but I will be out there in all weathers as far as it is possible.I don't mind the rain really,or wind either, come to that.

For some strange reason I decided to put on my hi-viz waterproof jacket this morning, must have been the week off work and not wanting to get wet. I wear it once a year and vow to never put the thing on again. Not only does it hurt my eyes it also heats you up like a microwave oven...

I wish I just wore a base layer and some arm warmers, would have been much more comfortable.
