Pal of mine is seeking a hard tail MTB for trail riding (new forest type stuff) ...nothing gnarly. He is a biggish chap, but in good shape, circa 6'2".

I have no idea on mtbs these days, any recommendations that I can pass off as my own knowledge?

I was thinking that the cube attention looked pretty good, perhaps a trek marlin, specialized Pitch...also, is it all 29's nowadays?

27.5" is the new in-thing in wheel sizes it seems, but at that lower end of the market, 26" is still there.

For up to £500, you could look at something like:
http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-gb/bikes/model/talon.27.5.3/19250/77362/#specifications
or
http://www.halfords.com/cycling/bikes/mountain-bikes/carrera-vengeance-mens-mountain-bike-2015#tab2
or
http://www.decathlon.co.uk/rockride...l#anchor_ComponentProductTechnicalInformation
or
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/felt-nine-60-2015/

Just to pick a few out of the air. It'll get a good serviceable bike and may get some niceties like hydraulic brakes.

Decathlon good for the money it seems. Look at Paul's cycles

As ever he should sit on a few at least, guess a road test ride won't help him decide on a bike for rough and tumble

Watch for toe clearance if he wants a 29er, particularly if he takes a medium or small frame.

Bewildering choice, and I reckon all of the recognised brands are on a par.

I was in Evans the other day and there were a couple of Treks with a fair bit knocked off.

Worth visiting your local branch, not all of the sale bikes in mine were on the web.

Dont think he will need a small frame lol, ive a specialized rockhopper 29er and cant fault it im 15 stone and have thrashed it on black trails and its holding up fab

I'll chuck in that my Giant Revel that I got for £500 (frame is almost entirely identical to the Talon) is more than adequate on moderate trails. Lots of fun on blue grade trails, but the rougher red routes showed up how clunky an SR Suntour fork is.

Think my fork is an sr suntour ive never heard a noise from it and i ride large drop offs and alot of downhill roots/rocks i was going to consider upgrading it but never bothered as its doing great
