Harrow removing cycle lanes

to anyone going up the nice clear cycle lane along a straight road, with no turnings to the left ( apart from minor residential roads which big lorries wouldn't use anyway, would they? ) it wouldn't appear to be risky in the slightest...

If it doesn't appear risky in the slightest then you need to work on your risk analysis!

The comment wasn't specifically at you per-se. Anyone who filters down a line of traffic needs to understand that there are risks regardless of the road markings. It's like people saying "I went through a green light & that car jumped it so I crashed into them"... green isn't 'charge through the junction' it's 'you have priority but be careful'.

Fair enough. But I'd still like all cycle lanes abolished.

The general move to remove street furniture is a double edged sword. Went to lock my bike up on Streatham high road on Saturday and all the sodding sheffield stands have vanished.

What about lanes shared with buses (taxi's/motobikes etc depending on where you live)? If I go through the town centre there are several places where I can use a bus lane - which is effectively a lovely wide cycle lane. You still have to be careful - as motorists will still turn left without looking, and if you have a number of cyclists you have to be careful about whether anyone undertakes you (a fast gutter hugger). And then I move back into the traffic as I need to.

Bus Lanes are a funny one as ironically in a lot of places they hamper other measures that would be friendly to cyclists and peds - road narrowing, putting in crossings, cycle stands etc.

I know of one place in Bristol where they have on a small side road/junction put in two planters with cycle stands in between preventing illegal parking on a corner/pavement.

Yes. Same here. 2 lanes each way, bus lane at either side are a lot of the problem ones here. Whilst ever the bus lane exists there will never be the appetite for other measures e.g. 20mph, road narrowing, more cycle stands, bus gate etc. Bus lanes are good for cyclists in some ways and bad in others. A similar thing is about to kick off elsewhere where they want to put a bus lane in in both directions - potentially stealing space from a cycle path. These schemes either end up with 1 bus lane and 1 lane of whining motorists or 2 lanes and a bus lane and screw the peds and anybody else.
