The passing of the last WW1 "Tommy" more than anything else in the News these past few days has impressed upon me.
Some of the fantastic pictures of Harry on the front pages of papers too.
Being 60 I remember bowling greens full of these vets. when I was a kid. Well dressed elderly gents and their wives, with the constant aroma of Ogdens Walnut pipe tobacco in the air on sunny afternoons. Pin striped suits with gold and silver watches on chains in their waistcoats.
They saw and did the unimaginable; they probably had joined up (many of them) as an adventure as beating the Kaiser's Army was going to be a doddle many people thought. Then came the trenches . . .
Sorry to go on, as I'm not getting any younger myself - but I just had this great sense of loss of a generation.
