it's funny when people go on about the money spent on fireworks and forget about money brought to local economy by all the people who went/stayed in London just to watch the fireworks and all the amount money London makes in tourism and leisure (ie restaurants, shopping, drink/food, etc). It is a huge boost to the economy.

As it's been mentioned it is some kind of global competition now, which country can do better!? We do need things in life to look forward to, and it was a fantastic display. Anything that provides entertainment is not a waste of money, it is a lot of fun. So let's enjoy it a least once year. We all deserve it! Happy New Year to everyone (even the miserable sods.. )

Gutted i didn't get down there to see it this year, it looked brilliant.
Two or three years ago was particually good, last year wasn't. We didn't go this year because the forecast wasn't very good. They got that wrong...
If anyone ever thinks of getting down there for new year, there's no gain without pain. Tube it in from Epping, get into central London at maybe 7pm, mosey round for a while, lots of walking, teeming with people, get to the Embankment at 8pm and your going to struggle to get in there. 9 or 10pm, its shoulder to shoulder...but the atmosphere is awesome.
Getting back out is even worse, tube stations absolutely cram packed with people, get seperated (and we did once) in there and you're going to struggle to find them again. Take kids in...never. We leave the Embankment say 12.30, its probably 2am before you get back to Epping, then drive home. Its a long night.
Mental, but you'll never forget it (if you like that kind of thing) Atmospheres brilliant, never seen any trouble in three visits.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Total waste of cash and if i had my way i would ban all fireworks anyway.

This country is skint but we can blow ££££ on a few whizz puff bangs.

FFS.

+1, apart from the developed countries being skint you have a lot of disasters around the world , natural or otherwise that this sort of money would have helped a lot .How many people could we have fed for the day so we could watch a few minutes of fizzle ?

London is interesting I think. Around here all you get are reasonable northerners talking to each other. On one street in London you might see a mugging, an eccentric professor type, a man in a suit and bowler hat with a briefcase, a black guy, a chinese guy, an Arab, a Dutchman, a pole, a traffic altercation between a posh chap in a rolls and a scroat on a Vespa, mental drivers etc etc. It's a complete madhouse but quite interesting. It's good in very small doses, but it's good to come back to the bosom of normal people.

Anyway, why do Londoners need fireworks for tourists? I thoughts that what the royals were for. I suppose replacing them with a few sparkly lights would be cheaper. Let's hear it for the fireworks!!
