It is when the softshell is relegated to the back of the cloakroom and the longsleave top is flavour of the month.

I calculate the seasons by referring to the number of layers I have to wear, the central heating, and the birds and the animals. There's absolutely no point in saying, say, that it's summer when it still feels like early spring. The great tits around here have only just started their territorial call so it's still winter!

I always class the seasons as follows:
Spring - March, April , May
Summer - June, July, August,
Autumn - September, October, November,
Winter - December, January, February.

Yup, still nippy in the softshell today. Dropped the thermal yesterday as nearly cooked, but the sun has done a bunk today.

Spring is definitely showing all the signs here. The nettles (in the countryside) have started to grow and this morning some winter flooding which as been persistantly here all winter/autumn has vanished overnight (meaning the trees are starting to draw water from the ground).
It has also been warm enough to have ground floor windows open during the day and the kitchen door is currently wide open (not actually shut the bedroom windows since we moved in last July & heating is not on).
Also the insects are back... having to kill midge that are flying into the house again and you are getting them collecting in the sunny spots on lanes/tracks/paths where they do the fly up & down vertically in the sunshine.

Reckon I should have to break out the suncream before long!

Oh and the crocuses are in flower here, with daffodils in bud.

We had Summer yesterday, but today it's back to Winter...

I was taught to use the Equinox and Solstice dates for the start of each season.
