I'm trying to buy a house within commuting distance of the Potters bar area. It appears I can get more house for my money in Hatfield - I don't know the place - does anyone on here know it? Are there particular areas to avoid (or should I just avoid Hatfield)? (I'd ideally like to live in the old part but I can't afford it).

My ex wife used to work in Shatfield and she reckoned it was a sheethole. Still, she also reckoned I'd never find out if she boned other blokes so we can question her judgement.

Becs - I'm surprised that 3BM (old prog-rocker that he is) hasn't directed you toward this epic piece of mid-70s keyboard-nurdling.

(and if any of you doubt the absolute necessity of punk, then nine minutes of this nonsense and comments along the line of 'I thought I'd seen most of the different Les Paul variants, even the ones from the 70's. I think the first time I saw a photo of Phil, I thought he was playing a "The Paul", which was sort of a low budget version of the Les Paul, without the carved top. But I think that wasn't introduced until a couple years later, and it had dot inlays on the fingerboard, not parallelograms'. will have you screaming for Sid Vicious)

If that was the best thing to come out of Hatfield, then Gawd help it!

I'm not sure that I quite agree with TBM here....Hertfordshire has some great cycling routes. Parts of Hatfield are grotty but there are nice areas and close by there are some really pretty villages. So the best advice is to have a look at what you can get for your money and see what the area looks like. If you do move, the cycling is good and there's a good mainline link to Kings Cross.

This is an Internet forum so don't come around here with reason and fact - not interested!

And I'm surprised that dell (jobbing architect that he is ;) ) hasn't directed you to toward the epic piece of '90s commercio-brutalism that is the Hatfield Galleria. What hell would look like if Tony Blair turned out to be the devil.

Sis-in-law lived there for a few years while at the University of Herts. As unpleasant as everyone says it is, especially the bit up the hill which often appears on police-camera-action. There are some lovely bits of Herts, but they usually come with a stockbroker price tag.

I have to drive to Hatfield in my lorry everyday, it is a dump, I'm there for around 30 minutes and thats 30 minutes to long. One highlight I see most mornings is a guy drinking Tennants Super, walking his staffie tied to a bit of rope, arguing with the tree his dog is p**sing up.
