I've had my renewal quote through and it's gone from £200 to £450:eek:. My circumstances are unchanged and I've had no claims in the last year.

A phone call has bought the quote down to £360, but that's still a massive increase over last year.

I appreciate the actual numbers are meaningless given the numerous variables, but in percentage terms are others having the same sort of increases?

I really don't want to spend all evening Googling (and then getting lots of junk mail and phone calls) if there's been a general increase recently?

Funny you bring this up, John lewis have normally been very competitive for us but this year they hiked it up by about 30%, I called them to cancel and they matched a way lower price (for actually more cover) from Aviva, I told JL to stick it, they had their chance of my business when they sent the renewal out, I'm not falling for that old inertia trick.

It really irks me when these companies send out inflated renewals and backtrack when you call them to cancel it and then try to persuade you to give them a chance. I'm sorry but you had your chance when you sent the renewal out, what do they think we are, mugs? :cursing:

I always get check prices for insurances etc. I wouldn't trust the insurance/finance industry with my dirty socks let alone anything else.

Check via a comparison site - and then take it out via a cashback site, to reduce the actual cost further. Even better, the comparison sites often pay you if you go via the cashback site to do the quote!

My broker sent me a quote for renewal with the same company but also enclosed a cheaper renewal elsewhere - I was pleased with their proactive approach.

Part of it is the increase in 'inertia pricing' but, yes, the rates for all types of insurance have gone up.

Some insurance you have to have - vehicles, for instance. Some you would be daft not to - building insurance, even if you don't have a mortgage. But some insurance you may not actually need. I haven't bothered with household insurance for 20 years and despite a couple of small thefts I'm well ahead.

The numbers you are quoting would seem to be far beyond the normal hike for those who don't shop around.

I think two things may affect this, firstly they are getting very hot on flood areas and trees. If you are near either then they may hike up the price.

Second is that they are getting more and more sophisticated with their checks and referencing of databases. Could be your neighbour put in a flood claim and so they hike up your premium as they see you as at the same risk, that sort of thing. We are moving from all paying an equal share of the risk to having the premium set by all sorts of factors so sounds like they are filtering something to come up with the increase.

Its not just insurance. Virgin media tried this with my Dad once. He wasn't having any of it. Said he would leave. Got same price as last year and free stuff. Price has not changed for 3 years now.

My tenant and contents insurance was meant to renew automatically in February with the quote static at £108. No money was ever taken so I've got to pull my finger out and get that sorted (and add the bike...).

I've just renewed the car insurance. Admiral's renewal quote was £672 but I needed to make changes. Cheapest alternate quote was £611 with Esure. I called Admiral, detailed the changes and they quoted £645. Told them about the lower quote and they reduced theirs to £595. Half the game seems to be haggling.

I was with Swintons and they wanted to increase mine by a similar amount 200 to 420. After about 30 mins on the phone they came down to 350 with a claim of 100 cash back if the policy was running after 3 months

I switched to Direct line for 183.00

The year before I was with Direct line and switched to Swintons for the same reason

It is just a silly game they all like to play.
