300km a week through London on a road bike.
You didn't say how much it cost, and as the OP related to a 4k car...so it cost £40 then, might be a good deal
What is all this? I agreed that there are some excellent, low mileage vehicles on the 2nd hand market and then you suggested that I was recommending the OP buy a motorcycle for his girlfriend, which was wrong.

Next you come up with the idea that, because the OP was talking about spending £4,000.00 then somehow that's how much I, a complete stranger, buying a completely different vehicle, had paid for mine, before introducing some arbitrary figure of £40, as being a "good deal" for a vehicle that you know nothing about. After that, you move on to complaining that you don't "see the point" in motorcyling to somebody that is, in all probability, a motorcyclist. So, what was that for? Why bother doing that if not to antagonise?

I'm afraid that, all in all, this makes you come across as something of a bigot, it makes you look a lot like some of these motorists that laugh at us cyclists, saying we're playing on childrens' toys in the road; that we must get tired; our legs must hurt; that we must be cold; that we should buy a car; that we should be like them, etc, etc.

All I was saying was that there are some good examples of vehicles on the 2nd hand market, and I wasn't even saying it to you, so do me a favour and go and vent your rather odd disapproval for anything that isn't a bicycle to somebody that cares.
Enlighten me on the benefits of motorcycling. Cycling gets you fit, and causes no pollution, neither to air quality nor noise pollution...motorbikes on the other hand?
Motorcycles pollute less than many other vehicles; take up less room on the road; less room when parked; are faster through traffic; are more economical; more enjoyable to use than many other vehicles; don't cause congestion... Will that do for you?

120+ mph ready to hit the brakes.

That photo is all that should be needed to show the benefits of motorcycling ;)

On a serious note: For distances longer than cycling, they take up less space than a car, can be parked for free, don't have to sit in traffic so generally less polluting. It's the ideal vehicle for longer distance travel instead of a singe occupancy car.

Also, they can get you fit too. Riding one fast takes quite a bit of physical effort.

Nope no appeal at all. Anymore than going down a hill at 40mph or more on a bike or driving a car round a racetrack
Here's me doing what @Smokin Joe is on about (Snetterton)
If you've not done it you wouldn't understand.

Back to the OP, I'm in a similar position actually hence my earlier post regarding PCP and owning nothing after 2 or 3 years paying relatively high monthly costs.
Our car is an 11 year old Citroen xsara Picasso worth probably £500 with 110000 miles and the usual door dents and scratches. So weighing up my options.

Car failed MOT on 11 issues, so now have to go and spend 4 biggies minimum (the missus demands!) on a new one. Never drive the poxy things, so really annoyed, as may well disrupt my plans for my first carbon with ultegra. Grrrr! Rant over.
most likely get it sorted for next to nothing if you know the right people - I doubt you really need a new car

This is true, I've just bought a 2003 motorcycle with only 4000 miles on the clock. Soooo excited to get my hands on it!

I've just bought a 2010 motorcycle with 4000 miles on the clock. :okay:

But anyway......I agree with others, cars are incredibly cheap now, I bought a Fiat 500 for my mum last month, a 2014 model, 18000 miles on it and not a mark on it anywhere, £5700 & still got a year+ warranty left. I crashed both family cars on the same day in March 2014, went out and bought a local FSH 2002 Focus to run around in for a few weeks whilst things got sorted, sub £1k, we still have it and it drives like new! Next we may splash out £2-3k and I'd expect, and will get, a car like new for that.
