As I say, I'll conceed if the RGS agree with you. The ordnance survey certainly mapped the islands, they mapped Bermuda as well.

As far as I can see from a quick search the correct term seems to be "The Normandy Archipelago"

If the OS isn't good enough for you, I'd say you're just being obtuse!

BTW - The Isles of Silly are also an archipelago, but still within the British Isles.

Thanks FM, I couldn't remember the term.

Why the RGS? Because they deal with geography whereas the OS deal with cartography, and the British Isles is a geographical concept. As you point out it's also a legal one.

It's me being a pedant as usual, ought to leave the thread to go back to where it came from, which is the delights of cycling in the Channel Islands. Something I'll be doing on Guernsey for a weekend at the beginning of September.

No, I'm being pedantic and the reason the OS is 2nd in line is in my response to Flying Monkey.

Funny relationship in the first place - Channel Islanders seem to think that England (not Wales, Scotland or Ireland) belong to them not the other way round, as they're whats left of the Normans, and are very proud of their Norman heritage.

But the definition is just an opinion. It's not defined in law, unlike the British islands. So the opinion of the OS ought to carry some weight.

This is getting silly.

I wonder what the Normans thought when they took the whole archipeligo from the Bretons in 911! (date not guaranteed)

From their location I'd class them as geographically part of Britain in much the same way as Bermuda or the Falklands are, feel free to disagree.

As I said, in the opinion of the OS, the Channel Islands are part of the British Isles. Their opinion is good enough for me, especially given the lack of any authoritative counter-argument.

Arggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I thought there would be 2 pages of good stuff to do in jersey not a willy waving contest by two people who probably don't even live there lol

So are the Channel Islands a good place for a holiday or not? Someone suggested them to me but with a 12-year old in tow I'm not so sure.

Isnt it funny how Cafe has got more argumentative lately?

Q.. Hi peeps, know any good hotels in Jersey....

A. No, but the paucity of your assertion ™ is wrong and heres FM to prove you wronger. Ha! ya tosser. Hitler. Usual Suspects. Daily Mail. etc etc.

Yes it has got more argumentative (i'm not saying that it is a bad thing, a little debate livens things up). I found the removal of P&L and the introduction of the pub a strange concept with some people adamant that the pub was not P&L it was a subforum of the cafe and others (notably Admin) saying there was no change - treat the pub as P&L. I know FM tried to get some more information to understand how it would work but i didn't see anything posted that really explained the concept.

I have no complaints, i am enjoying a little bit of debate coming back to the cafe (theres only so much tea you can drink or lies you can tell !)

Anyway, Jersey !
+1 for the underground hospital.

Depending on your interest in WW2 history the underground hospital can be worth a visit: http://en.wikipedia....hlgangsanlage_8

It's in my list. Read some stuff about I thought it was very interesting

We stop in a place called the Sandranne in St Helier. It's a proper 70s throwback but it's clean, cheap and the food's ok, if a bit predictable. I find it's better to save money on the hotel and spend it in restaurants.

We normally hire bikes from Zebra hire in St Helier, but you can get them from a small place at the beginning of the railway track ride by St Brelades.

Is it possible to hire some road bikes? Do they provide any? St Helier seems to be the better place to stay.. lots to do around that area..

Try and visit the other islands: Guernsey, Sark, Herm, Alderney, and take your bikes with you. Or even a visit to France.

It's a lovely part of the British Isles - so far from the maddening crowd.

Only going for a few days.. time will be limited

Thanks all.. Any more suggestion are very welcome
