I play "hard mode" because it keeps me from being tempted to try mental gymnastics like that - and messing it up horribly.
Hard mode is actually easy mode. Plod plod plod to a solution, often in 4.
I've always thought that hard mode could be so much more than this.
We all know the situation in which it's no longer possible to guarantee a successful outcome. In normal mode it's unusual to reach this position - I'll call it "trapped" - before round 6 because on earlier rounds you can play an eliminator word.
Making the assumption that the first priority is to avoid failure, it's clear that some starter words, such as EIGHT, which might be fine in normal mode can trap you immediately. On each subsequent round, as well as trying to find the letters which will solve the puzzle, you need to be considering the risks of becoming trapped.
Those of us who play the easy way never have to think about this. We may have other strategic decisions to make, but most of the time they're not especially complex.
I'll wager that hard mode is the tougher game if you're playing to its full potential. It looks as though I'm talking myself into giving it a much longer trial than I've ever done before
