Which I did by identifying needed letters in different words and constucting a dummy/scarificial word that filled in across the grid

I've been playing longer than most (224 days) and so far have 10 sixes, but I can't remember having a sniff of a five.

But it's far from impossible. Suppose your starting word is SALVO and one of the rows is in fact SALVE. You know what it is now, and any word ending in E completes it on your second go; something like TRICE might be a good choice. If your first two attempts score enough hits elsewhere in the grid you should finish in no more than six, and if you can complete two lines with a single word you'll get a five. I'm still waiting...
