He's got a good blog about that has he not? Gives loads of advice on Garmin etc - or is that someone else I'm thinking about.
Inspiring though. If you want to move mountains start by moving the small stones first...

Hat's off to the guy, well done.

I'm over weight and I hate it. My gut is huge! I found that no matter how often I went out on my bike it didn't reduce my bely at all. I seem to need more exercise than I've got time to fit into my life!

My next door neighbor was very overweight. Heavier than that guy was I reckon, he was enormous. Eventually he bit the bullet and lost weight, started jogging and was about to start cycling. I'd sorted his bike out for him and he was ready to go. Then just a few weeks ago he had a heart attack and died. Carrying all that weight obviously took its toll and he left it too late. The damage was done.

It's very hard to lose significant amounts of weight through exercise alone. It either takes a very long time, or you have to do a lot of hard physical graft per week.

I know from experience that I have to ride a hilly 200 km audax to lose about 0.5 kg of fat (or if you prefer imperial units, a hilly century ride to lose about a pound).

I'm trying to lose 21-24 kg so that would mean riding getting on for 10,000 km. That is equivalent to 1.5 times my best year's cycling and more like 2 typical years.

By doing my normal amount of cycling and walking, but cutting down on my calorie intake, I'm losing about 450g a week (1 pound). If I cut down my beer intake more, I'd be managing at least 50% more than that.

Well when I was racing 11 to 14 years ago, I weighed in at 12-13 stone.

I then got lazy and this time last year I weighed in at 17 and half stone, I'm now floating about between 13 and 13 and as half stone.

Losing just over 4 stone in weight and dropping 3 trouser sizes has been awesome, although I have put on a few pounds in the past few days with family visiting and eating chocolate etc:blush:, but as of Tuesday, back to the diet and hardcore cycling again.

Just wish I had the time to do 100plus rides, just have about the time to squeeze the odd 40-65mile ride in at the weekend, maybe when my daughter is a bit older and her indoors don't need me around so much at the weekend,,,,

May I ask how long it took you to bring your weight down? I have just started on this long road my target being to get rid of 3 stone (15 > 12) in a sensible time scale, but what is a sensible time scale?

Good on him...brilliant.
He touches on one fact i've seen when people want to lose weight...as soon as you start to talk about excercise..peoples eyes glaze over.
My wife has gone from 13 stone to less than 8 stone in just over a year. Unfortunately, she says as soon as girls ask how she's done it...and she talks about excercise, excercise exercise....peoples eyes glaze over

Careful eating (calory controlled) 1 to 2 hours a day on the Wii Fit (early on...less now), cycling, walking etc etc. Generally, a much more active lifestyle and careful eating.

Anyway...good for him.

Hehe, Frank is an acquaintance of mine and we often ride together if our routes clash. He's a pretty strong rider now, and he really thinks cycling saved his life. He'll tackle anything, he even did a closed road race last year at Oulton Park as well as the usual time trials and club runs.
Believe it or not, he often gets people having a pop at him on his blog, he prints some of them (which I think is good) but I think he got fed up with the idiots.
Nice to see him get some recognition via the BBC, his site was on fire yesterday with loads of 'cries for help' from people who are at the same point as Frank was several years ago.
Unfortunately, only a tiny minority will make it as far as Frank.

I don't eat any red meat or fried food, other than the odd takeaway. I don't eat any chocolate or crisps, fizzy drinks, I don't drink milk other than in cereal. I don't drink tea or coffee. I work beside guys who eat junk all day whilst I eat fruit yet they are thin and I'm fifteen stone!

The only way I ever loose weight is by eating literally nothing but salad...

Well, I got back on the bike July last year after breaking my hand. I started by doing just 5mile rides after work, 1 month later I up it to 8miles, I now do 14 miles in the morning and 16-20 in the evenings after work. At the weekend I'll do anywhere between 35 to 65 miles, jobs/wife depending.

Same at my work, people ask me how I've managed to lose the weight, healthy eating and shed loads of exercise, same reaction eyes glaze over. Or I get the piss taken out of me, the people doing the piss taking are allways the fat overweight people.

Most people in the know say you should lose 1-2 pounds a week, no more. At 1 pound a week, that'll take you 42 weeks. Obviously 2 pounds a week would take 21.

I'm finding 1 pound a week relatively easy to achieve. 2 pounds would mean me being much stricter on my beer intake and upping my cycling hours. I reckon 1.5 pounds a week is a comfortable target to aim for, and that would be about 28 weeks for you.
