I was musing the other day, if the safety elves were given free reign on Road Laws, what would be the result? Solid barriers separating footpaths and roads? Pedestrians crossing only at footbridges or underpasses? Compulsory speed limiters on cars? A ban on in-car sound systems? Your thoughts?

All cars to score as high for pedestrian safety as for adult occupants on here - http://www.euroncap.eu/home.aspx As it is, supposedly safe cars are riddled with killing points...on the outside. Look at the red bits on this 5-star rated vehicle - http://www.euroncap.eu/results/mercedes_benz/v_class/567.aspx That'll get things on a level safety requirement.

Actually talking about health and safety if you put the “bike chain wheel” into and industrial area it would be banned straight away and we would all have to have a fully fitted guard around the chain.

Its not the vehicles its the person driving the things, as when stationary they pose no risk. so the heath and safety mafia would make very one walk.

What instability? Cars are far more dangerous than bicycles and motorcycles (the annual road tolls of various countries are a good enough indication of that), so any decent health & safety plan should focus more on cars.

Let's not forget walking, while we're at it: it is inherently an unstable series of corrections against falling flat on your face while leaning forward that can only end in disaster.
