Last night commuting along the shared cycle path to work, I was on an unlit stretch out in the countryside, curving to the right which quite a few cyclists, pedestrians and runners can frequent and the occasional car coming towards us, when suddenly I came up behind a "Ninja" heading the same way as me riding slowly, probably because he could not see where he was going, who jumped a bit as I lit him up and came alongside.

Just as I passed him, I said "It would be nice if you had some lights so that you can be seen"

To which he replied, "I don't want to dazzle the drivers just like your doing" and something else that was inelegible as I rode away

What more can one say.

The moral of the story is I suppose, I shall have to forget having my front light shining on the road to see where I am going, but to angle it off into the corners to see what is coming up as I do not want to run into the back of a sensible cyclist, or else fit two lights.

I had a similar experience last night.

My new Moon XP-500 got its first outing, and it was doing a grand job of lighting up the shared cycle path when I came across another cyclist. He was riding wearing dark clothing, no lights (or helmet) and with a carrier bag dangled precariously from one side of his handlebars.

I slowed and pulled alongside him asking if he'd like me to ride beside him so he could see where he was going. He smiled and declined my offer stating that his lights were going to be delivered tomorrow.....

I did however mentally note that I only spotted him (and from a mile away too) because of the orange reflectors on his pedals. Hopefully the reflective detailing on my Luminite overshoes and two rear lights (one static, one flashing) will ensure that me and my reflectorless-clip-in-arrangement are visible enough from behind.

Every morning i go past a guy with a black bike, wearing black clothes and no lights, no hi vis anything.

Haven't seen him at all for the last few days, which reminds me to check the ditch at the side of the road.....
