No, It's line maintenance, out on the airfield, rain or shine (but mostly rain). Boeing 777-200, -300 and 767-300.

Don't forget to fasten the cowlings after you've checked the oil and water !

So...

Anyone cycling to Heathrow? They've stopped us cycling through the airside tunnel; we now have to park at the brand new 'cycle hub' and get a bus through the tunnel.

Obviously with most cycle commuters living within a few miles of the airport it's not worth their while cycling if they have to get a bus as well, which probably explains how the hundreds of bikes previously parked in the central area carparks have thinned down to the dozen or so parked at the cycle hub every day.

The best estimate for reopening the tunnels to cyclists is 18 months; the word on the street, however, is that it will never reopen for cyclists. I guess anything that slows the constant stream of cars and buses into the centre, or even momentarily inconveniences them, cannot be tolerated.

I tried passing this anti-cycling story to a national newspaper and actually got a reply, but it went dead after that.

ooh, that's harsh.
Maybe, but as someone who works there, has commuted into the CTA (prior to the side bores closing of course), I would not even try to ride the main bores. At the moment all the bores are being refurbished, it will be interesting to see what the long term plan is for cyclists in the CTA.

Are you talking about the main tunnel from Bath Road into the central part where terminals 1/2/3 are located?

No you're right, it's not technically an airside tunnel.

I mean the main road tunnel from the A4 / M4 spur into the central terminal area.

I remember at Gatwick you used to be able to take bikes airside if you worked there...

I find I'm not cycling as much now the tunnel is closed to cyclists.

The worst bit about the journey to work is getting the bus from the car park into the central area (and back out at the end of shift). Even if I cycle I still have to get this bus, so it's hardly worth it.
