Morning all,
I'm coming to HB this weekend with a pal for some pleasant walking and light MTBing. Does anyone know of any decent campsites nearby? Usual criteria, quiet, safe, with showers and not too far from the pub.

Thanks in advance.

There's one in Luddenden Dean a mile or two east. Jerusalem Farm: http://www.halifaxco...ites.6400339.jp

....and by the way there are two fantastic MTB trails there:

1 - The Limer's Gate BW that runs SE from the Hebden-Haworth road and drops steeply into the same Luddenden Dean - a really steep difficult test of your riding skills.

2 - The BW that drops down from Pecket Well on the same road to the NT car park for Hardcastle Crags, another steep, difficult and very technical trail.

There's also the old Howarth-Hebden road, which makes a good day out if you combine it into a circular route. Let me know if you want full details of a ride that takes in all three of these sections in one glorious 18 mile circuit, which can start and finish at that camp site.

Thanks, sounds good. The MTBing will have to wait, my tent mate is lovely but steep technical downhill is not her thing. More gentle stroll down the towpath.

I fancy coming back in autumn though for the challenging stuff, that sounds excellent.

I'm just about to go out. I'll post a few ideas later!

PS Okay, I'm back.

Jerusalem Farm campsite (as mentioned by Globalti above) is in a lovely spot but it is about 4 or 5 miles from Hebden Bridge. I thought it was quite a long way from a pub but actually the Cat I' the Well is only about 500 metres away via a footpath - take a torch!

If you want to be a bit nearer Hebden Bridge, you could try the New Delight Inn at Jack Bridge which has camping in an area out at the front of the pub. That's in a good spot for walking and MTB rides, being very close to part of the Mary Towneley loop (though that is pretty technical).

If you would like any help to plan a walk or a ride, let me know what kind of thing you'd like and I'll make a couple of suggestions. (If you have a GPS, I could knock up a GPX file or two for you.)

Thanks Colin, I'll take a note of that and we'll try both for size. I know the MT loop, Alun (of this parish) and I had a pop at it a couple of years ago but we didn't start early enough and had to cut it short before we got to the nrthern section round Widdop etc- it's a long way.

I will certainly take you up on some GPS files later, thanks. This weekend though is one of leisurely strolls and gentle bike tours between pubs, my pal isn't a cyclist so I'm in charge of sorting out a couple of bikes (easy!) and sussing out a few gentle routes, so that will be nice. I'll have a glance at the OS map, it should become clear after that. I think I'll take the SS MTB for me, what I can't get up on a 32/16 (iirc) is out of scope for my pal with 3x9 gears, so that's a decent match.

Oh, I know Alun - he's been on loads of my road rides round here!

The most obvious flat cycle route round here is the  Calder Valley Cycleway which runs along the valley. Some stretches of it are on the Rochdale canal towpath. You could descend to the valley at Luddenden Foot from Jerusalem farm, cross the A646 and get on to the CVC there and ride to Hebden Bridge that way. Mind you, it's a nice ride along Height Road from Midgeley to Pecket Well and you get great views from up there.

We have camped at a site near to Sowerby Bridge at a little place called Triangle. It is a Camping & Caravan Club "Certified Location" but we have stayed there without being CCC members. It is fairly basic but there are loos & a shower.

The lady that runs it lets you have fires - lifted off the grass or in one of the braziers scattered about. The site is of the main road down a road that you could easily miss. There is a little shop & pub at the top of the lane and a small cricket ground at the bottom.

If you walk the length of the site (it is a flat strip of grass between a tree-lined valley on either side) and go into the woods you come to a dissused railway track that you can easily cycle along, I believe it takes you into Sowerby and would be a good cycle especially if you hooked up to the Calder Valley Cycleway as mentioned by Colin. If you look on ukcampsite.co.uk you will find details and reviews.

Thanks folks for the advice. We ended up at the New Delight pub in Jack bridge, the closed road caused a bit of a crisis and having found the place late-on on Friday I couldn't get to it for roadworks and we had to go round. As in right round, about 6 miles. Ah well.

The weather was kind, we walked on Sat, BBQ Sat night, waited for the rain to clear on Sun am, then a leisurely bike stroll on Sun afternoon, followeed by a pint of Landlord in HB. It was just what the doctor ordered.

I will certainly be back shortly with a view to tackling more challenging stuff. Thanks again.

Oh, sorry - I clean forgot about the current chaos on the tops! The village is finally getting its own gas supply put in. For years, they've run on bottled gas up there.

I'm glad that you still had a nice time though.
