one thing i will ask though phil..i bought 26/1.95 the same has the off road tyres!..what could i go down to?..cus i think ide like a slimmer tyre,,or does that depend on my rims?,,cheers..dean.

they are schwalbe city jets and they do a 26/1.50 but like i say does it depend on my rims..cheers,,dean,

Yes you can go down to thinner tyres. I believe slicks are available as narrow as 1 inch (25mm) for 26" wheels (about the same width as pro racers currently ride). I'd suggest 1.5 inch would be narrow enough though.

The rim width does matter. This chart (link) shows what rim will take what width tyre. The size may be on a label or stamped into the rim, usually in the format 559x??. If not you need to measure the rim as shown in the article.

It may roll a bit easier/faster but the difference wouldn't be as noticeable as when changing from knobblies to slicks. I'd be inclined to wait 'til you've worn out the current tyres first.
