Hello

I've been cycling at a low level for many years, I commute to work (not far, but very steep in places) and the occasional longer ride. I've recently decided to do more cycling to get a bit fitter and a bit thinner. I'm hoping to do a couple of the south Wales sportives next year.

Ah, Ian. Hellair. Sportives, you say! Does that mean that you have either bought, or are about to buy, a sexy new road bike? I'm having a bit of an n+1 moment myself...

I have a steel framed tourer, I am currently lusting after various bits of shiny carbon and titanium exotica. My bmi says I'm borderline tubby, so the plan is to shed a few pounds. The deal with the other half is that I can buy a bike the same amount lighter than my current bike as the amount of weight I lose.

I see! Can you buy it on the promise of losing the weight, or has it actually got to happen first? You might argue that the shiny new bicycle is an incentive to do more miles...

What a charming phrase!!

Am I reading this right - if you buy a bike 5lb lighter than your current bike you have to lose 5 lbs from the tum?

If that's the case then it sounds like a brilliant deal for you!

Welcome to the forum BTW.

Yep, that's basically the deal. I don't think the other half quite realizes that the relationship between bike weight and price is not exactly linear. Having said that. I'm guessing that there are some rules to this game that I have yet to be informed of. And it's weight loss first, shiny new bike second. It gives me time to plot and save my pennies

Hello and welcome starthms! Do you mean big events or just group rides? Details of CTC rides here. If you get a road bike and fancy faster/longer club rides, the Swansea Wheelers do introductory rides to see if it's your thing. I'm with Wheelrights, the Swansea Bay cycle campaign group - info about local events is posted on the Wheelrights website here.

What happened to the Three Valleys Cycle Ride this year. The info online seems to all be from last year and nothing for 2009.

The Swansea Outdoor Group also do the occasional cycle ride (they mostly go walking). Their website is http://www.sue.alston.care4free.net/ I think the autumn events program will be posted soon.
