Hi Afnug,

That’s a kind offer and I appreciate it. I need to build up a little bit of fitness first and then I might take you up on that. I was swimming 3 times a week at Knottingley baths which worked wonders for me but you will be aware of the demise of that.

Thanks for the advice....

You can type your response in the same post as your quote you know .

You can 'mention' someone by putting @ in front of their user name and they will get an alert @Marrazi Mick.

Morning!!!

I'm not that far away either. & often ride through Fairburn (in either direction)
if I café stop. mine is normally at Squires, over at Newthorpe, on the return

I'm a bit partial to the history of the Great North Road too, so photographed a few places in Fairburn (& Brotherton)
It's the old route that interests me, not the dual-carriageway/motorway route
So, the stretch alongside the houses, up to the 'Wagon & Horses' (hope it had railings in the 'GNR' days!!!)

Hi Richard,

It's good to hear from you!

I was trying to find old photos of the A1 when I moved in as the Old road really interests me too but was disappointed to find very little locally. I took video footage on the last few days before the A1 was moved eastwards and upgraded to motorway. Younger people don't actually realise how close people actually lived to what in essence was a motorway. I remember being with my children at the park in Fairburn and being horrified how close to 40 ton trucks we actually were - Ahh, the good old days eh ?

Oh and I am very familiar with the Wagon & Horses by the way!!!

1. Mick, Likewise
There's two albums of 'GNR' photos (mainly 'West Riding'), on my FaceBook pages
They are public access, but I'm never sure if non-members can open them?

There's a couple of Fairburns 'GNR' on GeoGraph
Eg;

2. True, it was a very close road, & I guess not too long ago, the dual-carriageway didn't even have the fencing up
The skate-park is where the old road alignment continued northwards, as well as the overbridge

And, as for Bramham Crossroads, I get younger members of staff, who may drive that way, asking why it's so named...:headshake:
"Have a guess", I offer as an answer.......................

There are two excellent books available, & I have both
A1. Miscellania. 1.JPG

Some very good photographs, but it is London Post Office - Edinburgh, so only some Yorkshire details
