The other Sunday I was out for a ride down near Crewe when I heard a peal of bells being rung. Two things struck me as odd, first it is unusual to have a peal ringing for Sunday service and second was that they sounded strange. As I approached the small church building all became clear, the cacophony was recorded church bells - not the real thing. They were being played through a sound system in the church tower (and not a very good system at that).

I don't recall having heard another church doing such a thing - but you will set me right I expect.

It's fairly standard for churches whose bells need expensive repairs or are in need of a team of bell ringers.

Neither would seem to apply here. The church was not of a design that would have ever had a peal of bells - and probably never even had a single bell.
