Hmm....

Might give it a try for a rear-view camera until I can afford better

Last couple of incidents has made me wish that I had one....including one explicit threat to knock me off after tailgating and "buzzing" with front bumper close to pedals alongside rear wheel, and one illegal right turn narrowly missing another cyclist

I bought one of these from ebay in summer - couldn't get the thing to work. Instructions translated from Chinese through a Korean fellow I think. Still sitting in the box.

You're not paying for instructions or someone to help you - look online....

How hard can a few buttons be to work out anyway?

It's a type of image recorder. Most single unit helmet cameras use them. They are more compact than ccd's.
But the quality isn't as good, and they suffer from issues with juddering. Which is why it's important to make sure they are secured properly.

It would be improved if the lens was slightly more wide angled. This would reduce juddering and would give you a better chance of capturing an incident. The picture quality isn´t very good but it´s amazing for the price.
