I've been away for a week and its always good to come back to see the zealots on either side puffing their chests out in "how dare you tell me what to do" indignation!
Just wondered if any members of the "no helmet at any cost" brigade might fancy pitching to the dragons den the idea of helmets for walking home from the pub or in the car etc etc etc as it seems a shame to let the charlatans making bike or ski helmets take all the fools gold??
Yeah, here's the thing. No-one is telling people who choose to wear a helmet not to. Your freedom to wear a helmet will never be infringed.
Those of us who choose not to wear one are are frequently criticised for that choice, and there is the constant threat of compulsion. We are already at the situation where the majority of sportives and other events have mandatory helmet policies, and there are training courses, with the well documented benefits that they bring, that refuse to accept children without helmets.
What we take issue with is people vastly overstating the protective effects of helmets, because those are the same arguments that are used to support compulsion.
What we dislike are the double standards, where cyclists are singled out for not wearing a helmet, but no-one suggests helmets for pedestrians or pub goers.
