Hi all, I'm just in the process of cleaning my bike when I noticed that my back wheel has a noticeable dent. Would anyone be able to shed some light on the situation to whether or not they're safe to ride or if I should get them looked at asap???

Cheers!

Can hardly see it. I imagine it would still be serviceable but if it worries you put on a new rim. Might be a bit costly as it means rebuilding the wheel.

If you have access to a smooth faced bench vise you can carefully pinch it back to shape by taking the tire off and clamping as much before and after the dent as you can. It will only take a minor amount of force for most cases. It won't be perfect but it will be tolerable.

Do you have any cone spanners and a grip wrench? Place the cone spanner (or any thin flat piece of metal) on the outside on the rim and pinch the rim back into place with the grip wrench by squeezing against the spanner. ie on side of the wrench is inside the rim the other is on the outside of the spanner.

Check out how worn the rim braking surface is first. If the wheel is quite worn, dent's usually start at the time you need to replace (just before the rim splits). I've dented new rims and bent them back into place carefully (happened on 1 day old rims) but when dents have appeared after 18 months of commuting, then it's time to renew.

Do you have a rim brake on that wheel? If yes then it would surely grab really badly once every revolution.

The wheel is only a month old with 200miles on and it's never been used to brake on as there is no calliper on the rear. I've reframed from using this bike for the time being so I've spoken to the LBS and they recon judging by the photos that they can get it straight again and that they wouldn't charge me if they couldn't so it's booked in for Friday.

Cheers everyone for there help and advice but I'd rather not do it myself because I could just make the problem worse..
