not sure if this is the best place to post this but here goes...

Next summer the missus, two kids and I are going to visit London to 'do the sights'

madame Tussards, Buck palace, tower of london etc, you get the idea

What i need is a place to stay. Ideally something like a travelodge or travel inn. It does not need to be in the centre. It could be somewhere in north london (we're from up north) that is close to a tube station.

Any advice would be appreciated

Happy new year

This is the right spot for your question, someone asked a while back and got some good advice.

Or just wait and get it from the horses mouth, it'll all have changed since then.
There's loads of em on here and they seem quite civilised.

We stayed in Lancaster Gate opposite Hyde Park, think it was a Corus on a special weekend rate, loads of hotels doing deals there. Plenty of tube stations nearby and lots of places walkable through the park; Albert Hall, Kensington, Knightsbridgeand Park Lane.
Hyde Park itself is a nice walk in the morning.
Behind Lancaster Gate is Notting Hill if you fancy a walk at night to see where the other half live.

When my ex used to go to London to work 2 days a week she stayed at an Ibis hotel by Euston Station. It is round the side of Euston so you don't need to cross Euston Road which is wide and busy at the best of times.

You can also search Google maps with Travel Lodge London, Ibis London, etc and it will show you where they are.

gaz - the problem with searching the travelodge site is i don't know where the hotels are in relation to tube stations or even local amenities.

Transport is pretty good that all you need is a tube staiton and nothing else to worry about.

Have a fantastic time in London IMHO it's the greatest city in the world. Wherever you choose to book check for planned closures on the tube. At weekends their are quite a lot of these closures.
Staying in the wrong place with the local station closed can be a nightmare This link gives the next six months worth.

I've stayed there too. It took ages to get into London proper, we decided against staying there again, especially with a small kid in tow.

I don't know what you consider ages but it takes me about 25 mins from my place around the corner from the Travelodge at East India/docklands to Oxford St. via 277 bus and Jubilee line from Canary Wharf.

Bring your bike and ping us for a timed lap of richmond park  As for hotel, as long as you choose somewhere in zone 1, youll be very close to some key sites to visit. Docklands is too far to be practicle.

Out of all the travelodge options, i would choose the covent garden one as it's very central and close to lots of different tube lines.

This is a very good call. And from this hotel you will be able to walk to all the attractions you would want to see (apart from Madam Tussauds which is a couple of stops on the tube)

Yup...also note that in summer you will want to be central so that you can walk and avoid the sweaty tube as much as possible! Ahhh. its so nice rembering heat!
