I spent about £360 on my GT avalache 2 a few months back, and spent the same on getting lights, helmet, mud guards, decent D lock and then insuring my bike amoung other bits and pieces. Im probably just under the £700 mark! Luckily ive had some holiday money and other bits to help with the costs.

I agree with everything said here, but to save on costs, you may already have a jacket suitable, and because of the distance, normal wear is ok too, just in case you dont take to it,unlikely, but you never know, but a lock and lights are needed, also a puncure repair kit, just in case, and pump,as a minimum.

Had mine for 2 years (old version) and its a truly great bike!

As someone who doesn't know anything about disk brakes... how much do you need to spend on a bike before the disk brakes are OK ones?

At the very least £500 IME, you need to be looking at Hopes really, and hydraulic, none of the mechanical variety.
