Hi

I did do a search (I'm new) but couldn't quite understand some of the things I found.

I am doing a sportif tomorrow and having to borrow a 29er MTB (a Kona Mahuna or Kahuna). I will need to fit slicks or semi slicks by tonight, and I only have the option of Evans or Halfords and what stock the local store have in stock.

My question really is, what tyres can I fit. Do they have to be specific slick MTB (29er) tyres or will any road tyre do?
The wheel-set according to the web site is WTB SX23 rims but this is all the info I have on them (or can find). I don't know the exact width of them and whether that is a concern with what road tyres will fit.

I also don't know if I have to but new inner tubes to go with the new tyres?

Does anybody have any recommendations they can give me please? The cheaper the better (within reason) as this is a one off thing really although I would pay a bit more for some sort of puncture resistance.

I am really struggling to work it out, and don't fancy doing the ride (about 65 miles) on full blown knobbly tyres so would appreciate any help, especially as I need to buy them today :-)

Many Thanks

Matt

You can ride on the knobblies if you pump them up to the max pressure (should be about 60psi and will be shown on the tyre sidewall) and personally I wouldn't think twice about riding 'only' 65 miles on knobblies rather than buying a set of tyres for just one ride but then I am reasonably fit.

You should be able to run any 700c tyre if it is reasonably wide. My hybrid has 29r MTB rims and I use 700x35c tyres and reckon I could easily fit a 32c tyre or even a 28c at a pinch. Just to avoid any confusion, the 700c road size is the same rim diameter as a 29r MTB wheel.

Ideally I suggest you are looking for any reasonably slick tyre in the size 700x32-42c at around £15 a tyre. I still think you could get away with the knobblies though

Conti SpeedRides are ok, light (~280G each), 42mm and semi slick.

Don't ask about fairy protection with them, though.

Oh and 65 miles on knobblies will remind you just how many muscles you have in your legs, as well as finding no-one wants to ride with you for too long.

Many thanks to you two

Unfortunately I probably don't have too many muscles in my legs and 65 miles will be a long way for me. In addition to the lack of any real fitness. I am just going to do it at my own pace while my friend completes the 100 mile ride.

So if I do decide to get a slick/semi slick I just look for a 700C tyres with a 32 or 35 diameter. Halfords seem to have a few that meet my needs. They dont have a SpeedRide but they do have City Ride and also a fair few Schwalbes.

Many thanks
