I wouldn't buy any of the 3 brands listed, primarily because I haven't heard of 2 and I don't know much about Moda.

For £999 you have many options, I don't think the Moda is the best option... IMO you'd get better components on a CUBE or FOCUS bike.

There's a lot of love for the BTWIN bikes on here, the entry level BTWIN 3 (Red) is only £299. http://www.decathlon.co.uk/triban-3-red-road-bike-id_8274036.html

Thanks - out of stock though, so not a consideration for me unless that changes sometime soon!

I'd started with a view of spending £500-600, but I could be persuaded to spend £900-1,000 if I felt it was really worthwhile.

Well, I guess for me there would be two elements.

Firstly, if I felt the extra money would give me something that would last longer - both from a quality perspective, and from a 'less likely to want to upgrade' perspective, then it would appeal.

Secondly, if I was given genuine reasons for the extra cost, in terms of performance, then it would also appeal.

In terms of what I am looking for, it's hard to say.

I have never ridden a road bike before, so many of the differences between models are things that don't mean anything to me.

Performance really hangs on the rider I reckon! Cav would be quicker on a much cheaper bike than me on the most expensive one!

Of course, but the bike plays a part.

Not as much as you may think! What hybrid do you have?

Do you plan to use the roadie in all weathers? Fit a proper rack?

Personally if you have the cash I think it's worth having 20 gears so min shimano tiagra or SRAM apex, if lots of hills then perhaps a triple

dodd82 you are more than welcome to come and try one of mine and if you lived a bit more local i might even lend you one for a period to see how you get on with a road bike

2. Moda Rubato - £999. He told me that this comes with much better tyres that are probably worth a few hundred pound alone, and if I had the money, would provide a noticeable difference to the GTR.

Blimey, the rubber on my Golf GTI costs only a little more than that! I assume you mean the wheels (and tyres).

Post the spec for the 3 bikes and let people compare the componentry etc
