Help with Cleats

Hi,

I recently bought a road bike and Shimano PD-EH500 SPD pedals.
After a few months of riding on the flat side of the pedal with normal shoes, I decided to get proper cycling shoes, a world which I am completely new too!

I bought these:

These came with the red cleats shown in the pic, but I think I need different cleats for the pedals I have, I did find these

Are these correct ? Someone told me they are mountain bike cleats, which has confused me further :~)

Yes but you need mountain bike or touring type shoes where the cleat is recessed. As even if those take 2 bolt cleats, they’ll be lethal to walk in!

send the shoes back and get something like this

You don’t need road shoes on a road bike.
Alternatively, change the pedals to compatible SPD SL and use those shoes and cleats (but you won’t want to walk far)

The shoes that you bought are dual purpose. Remove the red cleats and you can bolt on the cleats that you identified. The blue is where they are attached.

The cleats below are fine. Just note that the shoes won't be comfortable to walk as they not true SPD which are recessed. I would suggest exchanging the shoes for real SPD shoes with recessed cleats.

The cleats you have been given with those shoes are 3 bolt road type. Which make they are I do not know. It is important to know as they are not all compatible depending upon which pedals you have on the bike. Look cleats do not fit Shimano pedals and vice-versa. Those cleats are not Shimano as Shimano ones are black with different colour tips - blue for 2 deg of float (side to side movement), red for 0 deg float and the normal yellow giving 6 deg float. Most ride the yellow ones as they give the most lateral play and hence easier to set up. Shimano call these SPD-SL type. The other cleats which will fit the pedals you have bought are known as 2 bolt SPD type. You can get shoes specific to either, or some which accept both types - but if they accept both they will be less comfortable for walking in than a dedicated SPD shoe which has a recess under the sole for the cleat - hence why mtb or touring shoes are likely to have them as they assume you'll want to walk around in them.
