Help with Cyling and trains poll

Hi folks,

The News in Portsmouth has run an article on the local trains banning cyclists on trains.

There is a vote as to whether bikes should be banned at eak times on trains. It would be nice if there was a resounding NO.

I'm nowhere near Portmouth but I voted no. When I lived further away from work it was a great option for me: bike-train-bike to work and then cycle home. I think more people should have this option.

The vote has now changed to "should cars be allowed to park on Southsea Common" so sorry Cee, couldn't put my 'peneth in.

Unfortunately bikes on trains aren't big on the franchise's to-do lists. Cross Country are modding their Voyagers, reducing bike space in the process and the SWT Desiro bike spaces are usually full of luggage because...........the trains pick up the Heathrow traffic at Woking and..........they have NO large luggage space! There's already a ban on bikes during peak hours from many stations into Waterloo.

I voted NO to parking on Southsea Common. Hope that's what you wanted? If the place is full of cars, where can I go for a knife fight of a Friday night?

Well, like Bollo, I couldn't vote.

I'm lucky to use a service operated by Northern Rail, who take the pragmatic view that if you turn up on a bike, and can put it in the carriage without endangering your fellow passengers, they'll carry you and your bike to your destination. There isn't really enough space if all of the regulars turn up for one train, but in such cases I generally wait ten minutes or so for the next one.

Lots of light transit and rail systems across the world carry bikes with no bother - quite why it's such a palaver in the UK is yet another oddity, imo. (Although I've no doubt it keeps the manufacturers of folding bikes in business).

Well I vote in favour of being able to take bikes on the trains at any time. Will this count???

Im not voting because I have my reasons.I thought other rail companies did this...I.E at Liverpool Street and South West Trains.

Southern Railway said it introduced the ban in 2006 to allow as many passengers as possible to get on their trains between 7am and 10am and 4pm and 7pm.

You don't see bikes on the tube,well hardly ever but nobody complains about that.

Southern Railway said it introduced the ban in 2006 to allow as many passengers as possible to get on their trains between 7am and 10am and 4pm and 7pm.

You don't see bikes on the tube,well hardly ever but nobody complains about that.

People don't complain about cycles not being allowed on the London Underground because cycling in London is accessible and feasible. I regularly cycle from East Croydon to Enfield on my Brompton which is very "doable" (and yes I could put my folder on the tube but choose not to). Although it would be nice to be able to take bikes on the tube I can understand with the space available on escalators and platforms this is probably not sensible. This is not the case for the often much longer National Rail journeys when cycling may not be practical.

Yeah if the journey doesn't consist of a long tunnel.I knew that although I think I have put my bike on the tube about once.
