Is a new version of the same not good enough?

yes, that's what I'm after but don't know what product code they are

are these that same? http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/goodridge-hayes-so1e-mx2-mx3-gx2-disc-brake-pads/rp-prod14468
Yes, those are the right ones.
However, you can get Superstar Components versions for £5.48 for a single pair, or a four pair discount pack for less than £18 .
Go to http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/index.php?cPath=21
And look at the pad figment guide and pad identifier to double check the ones you want. ( Hayes So1e are pad Y3)

I always get Superstar pads, and have never been let down by them. The organic/semi-metallic version are pretty much a standard pad. Sintered are dearer and often noisy, but I like the Kevlar versions which are a bit dearer but have a great feel to them. They post quickly and you'll get some free Haribo and possibly some groovy stickers too!

thanks for that, just looking at the Y3 in the kevlar on the Superstar site and they say they are for Hayes So1e hydraulic brakes but mine are not hydraulic, the Y3 in sintered just say Hayes sole and don't mention hydraulic so would they still be the Y3 ones I need but my only option is in sintered ?

Go off the profile. The Y3 pad in the identifier is the same shape as your photo. I general terms, if it's the same shape, it'll fit your caliper. If you want to buy sintered it'll do the job, but they are really designed to work at high speed in an abrasive environment, and take a while to warm up. I think you can order the kevlar one confidently, but if you have any doubts ring Superstar and ask. They are normally good with advice on the phone.
