Here is a really dim question I really should know

Any apps you have running which require data, e.g. weather, facebook, email will sync every few minutes depending on your phone setup and will consume some of your data download allowance.

They will never exceed your 500mb allowance, but if you surf a lot or use youtube you will hit the data allowance limit quite easily. Check with your provider what happens after that, some will charge automatically (which can be quite expensive), some nothing happens unless you go way over.

Some providers accounts are quite easy to check and see how much you are using every day.

You can get apps for android which allow you to monitor your usage. Tell it how much you get a month and it'll show you a handy usage widget on your home screen so you can keep an eye on it.

500mb is awful. I'd say about 800-1200mb would be 'normal' for the typical user.

I get a 1000mb (1gb) with Virgin and managed to use 300mb-ish last month without even noticing...and that was before I could tether my phone to my GF's computer that doesn't have 'tinternet access. I expect my data usage to be double that next month.
