Here's why you shouldn't overtake at 'pinch points'.

Even if you might consider it sufficient room there is no accounting for the number of idiots on the road.
if the driver can hit a traffic island head on it could easily be a bike next time.

only choice is to close the gap by taking a more central position.
the car/van can easily accelerate after the pinch point.

I can't say I would take the same position as you though the pinch point. AT LEAST communicate with other road users, tell them to hang back by putting your arm out and looking behind you / to the side.

It's a possibility, but it may have given the opportunity to have a chat to the driver about the stupid road layout and it was more a suggestion of offering to help a fellow human being as opposed to getting embroiled in a who was in the right discussion
I'm not criticising either OP.
Problem is, by the time you've got to the stage of asking if he's okay the driver may well have already decided it was your faul & will decide to seek revenge

Unlucky for the driver because a thud like that might cause more than just a pucture,he should have been paying more attention instead of trying to gain a few seconds to desperatly pass you !
At least you are safe, thats the main thing

I have been on the receiving end of a number of pinch point overtakes where I have had to take to the verge/path to avoid being hit by 'some' drivers.
I am afraid I am in the 'ride on and leave the nugget to fix the tyre problem himself' camp.
