Ornate lugs are not for me. They make a bike look like something Dracula would ride.

Those are a bit OTT for me, although I do like a nice lugged frame. I wonder if the OTT lugs used by some builders were a means of advertising who built a bike back when frames used in racing had to be unliveried?. The things like curly stays and wrapover stays would make even a plain frame easy to identify.

I think you've got it. Hetchins were one of those who specialised in making the cut of the lugs a recognisable feature. If the frame in the OP had been unbranded and we were asked to guess the builder they would have been my first choice. One thing I do like is the gold lining round the lugs, I had a Woodrup sprayed like that when I ordered it.

Surely that's part of the checking over procedure, to have a little test ride to make sure everything is working as it should.;)

Some of it is purely a matter of time, there is only 1 full time 'qualified mechanic'.

Also 90% of the time a test ride isn't necessary.
