If you're aiming for road cycling can I be the first (and I won't be the last) to point you in the direction of the Triban 3 from Decathlon. LINK This is the bike of the moment on here as there is nothing quite as well specced for the money.

You got a bike yet?...if not then can second the Triban. Are you going to commute or start with some leisure rides?? Whatever you do, don't worry about people you see cycling around (probably faster than you). Everyone starts somewhere and you'll be surprised how fast you improve and grow in confidence!
