It's quite common for a motor vehicle to overtake a cyclist, and then turn left and hit them. This has happened to me, though fortunately it wasn't a truck. I was luckier than the poor lady who was killed last month.

Skip and tipper lorry drivers are often paid per load, they get paid to deliver or take away spoil. They are also, in my experience, often homicidally reckless.

Forgive me but I drove into Peterborough this morning . Needed to give the car a run as haven't used it for a month. On the outskirts of town on the south side there is a new road underpass industrial area being built and the road has been slightly re-directed into a huge chicane with 20mph limit adjacent to the old road for a short stretch. There is loads of mud all over the road. As I was driving through the chicane this morning a huge new looking double wheeled tipper truck suddenly pulled out in front of me from the site with out looking. I had to brake hard even at 20mph ........... Anyway I let it get a bit ahead as I was concerned with the large amount of mud falling from the back so I as I say I kept well back. The truck leaves the 20mph limit in which it accelerated to 30-35mph quite quickly anyway so breaking the speed limit there and then entered into a 30mph zone going past houses and a large school. I was driving at smack on 30mph, but the tipper truck was rapidly disapppearing into the distance. There are many warning signs indicating the school and school kids. I reckon he must have been doing 45-50mph along this 30mph road . So no regard for the speed limit again or the safety of others in particular school kids or dippy mums in people carriers. Unfortunately I did not get the name of the company on the cab and when I went by again just after lunch I couldn't see any trucks. I didn't fancy stopping and enquiring of the site manager as these people can be a bit primitive with their social skills. Anyway just re-enforces my view that these type of HGV tipper earth moving trucks are absolute psychopathic maniacs. Even in the car I find them very intimidating and when on the bike I will now get off the road and let them pass as it is simply not worth being run down by them. I already had one very bad experience from one last year when cycling to Peterborough early on a saturday morning in the middle of nowhere. The driver tried to force me off the road as he couldn't pass due to an on coming car and then tried as in the case of another poster to attack me. Thankfully my Abus Granit X Plus was a suffcient deterrent. Kerry Plant Hire was the name on this huge tipper truck with a green and white cab. He took a second run at me having hidden Duel style, me thinking 20 minutes was sufficient time to have passed before continuing, only for him to re-emerge blasting straight toward me a second time attempt. Had I not jumped with my bike into a drainage dyke I would be DEAD. His tyre marks on the edge of the grass verge adjacent to where I had jumped. I definitely believe that 2nd time around he wanted to kill me and therefore it was definitely attempted murder. The plods in Peterborough were absolutely fecking useless. Beware the drivers of these trucks they are pyschopathic maniacs.

Is this a generalisation of all tipper drivers or just the drivers that work for Kerry Plant?

No, just the large majority of them that are knuckle draggers .

I have a friend of a friend who drives big artics for ASDA and Sainsburys. As well as an HGV1 trucker he is also a trained concert musician - a violinist plus is pretty hot on the piano for good measure, not whilst he's driving artics I should hasten to add. He's had a number of careers. Keeps himself going with several fingers in many pies. He currently runs an exotic classic car business as well so a busy chap and all round nice bloke. However he tells some shocking stories of construction truck drivers and also of foreign truckers in this country .

I've had a few run ins with bad lorry overtakes and they are pretty scary. I had a go at one driver but it didn't really seem to do anything.

Like you say, most HGVs are fine. I've had plenty of decent overtakes and been thanked when letting them through and things.
