It's not real - it's a TfL video I was involved in last year and that was not released.

No, I'm not the one releasing it - someone uploaded this anonymously and emailed me with the link yesterday.

Very scary!

I have seen cyclists doing just that on far too many occasions - thankfully, the ones I've seen have got away with it, but one one occasion it was very close indeed - i was a pedestrian and was on the edge of running forward and dragging the rider off her bike to safety as she attempted to navigate a 30cm gap between lorry and pavement.

That is scary, I only saw the cyclist appear in the mirror for a few moments and that was because I was looking for it!

Same here, I only saw the cyclist for a few moments because I was watching the left mirrors

The driver would not have been able to see you on your 'bent, either. Supposing he'd needed to reverse?

Thanks for highlighting this vid, BM.

I'll cross post this in the HGV/cyclist sub-forum as that's where other vids on this subject are listed.

Do you know why this wasn't released?
It's very very hard hitting but the only downside i see is that it lays blame on the cyclist

You're being quite clinical there aren't you? In a city like London, how many times do other vehicles stop in the rear blind spot of a lorry?

About as often as cyclists filter. Lorries aren't safe to anyone, anywhere.

If I'd been making this video I'd have chosen a junction with a pedestrian barrier and a green-painted cycle lane running invitingly along the kerb.

Boris (or should i say ken) has done a sterling job and 99% of the pedestrian barriers have been removed.

Thankfully, a lot of guard railing has been removed (but certainly not all). Like you, I'd have preferred a cycle superhighway on the left leading to an ASL zone. However, as this was a TFL sponsored vid, it was not going to happen.

I'd also like to have seen a complementary vid aimed at HGV drivers hooking cyclists ahead of them, or being distracted etc

Gaz, I'm guessing the vid was held back because it leans towards blaming the cyclist.

Think that's the point, with lorries being so long they can't help cutting a corner. It's the same reason you shouldn't go alongside a HGV on a roundabout in a car. Also why you sometimes see them in the right hand lane signalling to turn left and I've lost count of the numbers of muppets (mainly in cars) ignoring the indication and going up the inside only to get a bit of a surprise...

A cyclist *can* stop themselves going into blindspot. They just need to know that such a thing exists...

I had to be much closer than I normally would so that my camera wouldn't catch the cyclist - he goes across the front of the lorry and appears on the right just before the lorry moves off. In reality I would have been in the offside lane and well back from the HGV in that sort of situation.

Nothing bent specific going on here, where a normal cyclist is visible in the mirrors, so is a recumbent.

It illustrates how easily it could happen. Yes the driver might have checked his seven o'clock more often in the mirror but the cyclist would also have been at fault, and dead of course.

Good film.
