I've decided to get a bike for the first time in many years with the intention of cycling to work. I'm a little bit nervous about it and my partner is not being very supportive of the idea. I'm hoping to find some motivation here as I don't want to have two cars for our household anymore.

I've just ordered a bike through the cycle to work scheme and intend to commute instead of replacing my aging car. We do have another car but my partner is not being very supportive about my decision. I'm hoping to find some motivation here and some encouragement. It will be a roughly 19 mile round trip if I go ahead with it.

Hi
I am fast approaching 60 and i have been doing the same sort of distance for about 15 years on top of a manual job on shifts so its doable and if you plan ahead with your route and what to do if you do have issues you will be fine .
I started riding to work 2-3 times a week and built up to doing it every week as i got fitter and when the weather is really bad i am no longer a hero and will use the family car or ask for a lift from a work colleague as where i work there is no public transport , not that there are many buses after midnight ;)

I do a 25-40 mile round trip, and have done so since 2011.

As @cyberknight has put it's about building up the days. I do have suits / shoes at work so only travel with minimal clothing and no laptop, etc.

The route is important - it's worth looking closely at the types of roads / paths you'll be on. Also, if commuting mudguards and good lights are essential due to the lovely weather we sometimes get.
