Hi,

After years of the school run, the kids now get the bus so I treated myself to a bike. I tried a hybrid but didn't like the upright position or the suspension so went for a Giant TCX 3. I like the riding position and it's treated me well for the couple of months I've been using it. I only have a short commute, 3 miles each way, but go out for longer rides at the weekend and I'm really enjoying it. Not too fit or fast yet, but that's a work in progress. I found some black ice this morning and had my first embarrassing sitting on the road and not on my bike moment, a very nice lady got out of her car to check on me, the local school kids had a laugh :-)

I find most drivers really good, but have had a couple idiots in a rush. Thanks to all the advice on this site I am much more confident than I was a couple of months back.

Whilst the TCX 3 is great, I might have an opportunity to get another bike in a few months as I get a long service award from work of about £1500 (although i need final permission from the wife) and like the thought of a road bike to use at weekends and on sportives. I've got a couple of local shops that have a selection of different bikes and will try some out, but I'd also welcome guidance from those in the know.

Cheers

Hi Kipster,

from Montrose, Angus (on the North Sea Coast)

I too had my first black ice experience this weekend, not more than 5 yards from the house. I had just clipped in and was getting on my way when down I went. No damage more than a few bruises and abrasions
- muttered the Rule 5 mantra and got started again.

Also like you I have a hybrid, Boardman hybrid Team, and have started looking at road bikes for for the coming spring.summer, and will have to get buy in from the gaffer.

From a recent thread the Triban 3 has many supporters and would leave enough of your £1,500 to take your wife on holiday (maybe a cycling one). I am sure you will get many good suggestions for a road bike and£1,500 will give you a large range of options.

Hi and welcome,
There's a huge range of road bikes to choose from.
I suggest you look at the bike retailers websites and your local LBS and then make up a short list.
Look through the reviews online of bikes that interest you.
Take your time and don't rush into anything.
Once you have your short list and, if you have difficulty making up your mind, I'm sure you will get some informed opinions here.
I wish you well and take care on the ice:smile:.
