Hi All

I'm Al from Notts. Currently on a bike maintenance course, learning the 'M' check and basic maintenance and repairs. A bike is supplied and I get to keep it at the end.

I've not ridden a bike for over 30yrs, so a daunting experience ahead.

Hi BigAl and :welcome:.

Cycling is supposed to be fun, otherwise we wouldn't all do it. Don't be daunted, just get out and enjoy yourself, all the rest (speed/distance) will come in due course.

That I can understand. Try some quieter roads to start with and when you venture on to the busier ones don't hug the kerb like most beginners do as this gives the motorist the impression that they can overtake you even when it may not be safe to do so. (It also gives you space to escape into if they pass too close).

I intend to try the quieter areas to start with, but even some of the local estates, are like rat runs, with motorists flying round corners at speeds, idiots on motorcycles without helmets, not to mention all the other things like potholes.

I might just have to put stabilisers on for a while ^_^

Hi there BigAl and :welcome:
Beginning cycling on the roads is daunting, well do I remember the fear of cars!
With time and experience you will gain confidence. Soon you will be filtering, signaling, changing lanes while on the bike without a second thought

Thanks for the welcomes and advice. I can't wait to get out there. Hopefully my bike will be up and running by next week. The grandkids are already asking if i'm taking them out on a bike ride. What have I let myself in for ?

:welcome: im impressed already. You are doing a cycle maintenance course well done. Most of us just post and ask and get back all sorts. Within it though will be some great advice and usually the answer to our problem and of course lots of chuckles.

The most important thing is to enjoy it.
