Hi Catherine - welcome to CC!

I had a holiday in Swaledale once (delayed due to work pressure during June-October). We ended up in a caravan in Keld at the start of November and there was a blizzard the first night! I had to walk from Keld to a little village shop in Muker (or was it Thwaite?) in foot-deep snow. It did seem a lovely part of the world, though very isolated. I went back there on my bike one sunny day and that confirmed it.

PS Swaledale sheep are my favourites!

Sounds like home!! Are you coming up for 'Le Tour', the route comes right through Muker. You're right about the Swaledale Sheep - they're propper ones - a leg in each corner, a good coat and a pair of handles.
