I'd be inclined to travel as light as possible, on a lightweight road bike with a set of panniers to carry clothing, and skip the idea of camping in favour of B&B's

Welcome anyway

've done a couple 20 mile rides on my mountain bike unloaded but I really would like a dawes or similar steel touring bike. I'm thinking of tackling Le2jog next year if I can get fit enough.

Hi Big Foot, that is also my intention to try LEJOG or maybe JOGLE next year as well, which was the main reason for purchasing the Dawes in the first place. I bought the bike in August and have completed over 700 miles since then. I have certainly found the bike easier to ride longer distances and have just completed my first half century . I took the train down to Axminster and then rode home to Gillingham. Very hilly though around Axminster. Hoping to take the train East to Southampton next time and cycle back. Like you, I began rides of around 20 miles and have slowly increased to 50 now, although that really is my absolute limit at the moment.

Yes Berties, the puddles were piddles but changed the name to spare the ladies blushes :-)

Bikerta, Gillingham! growing up in Stalbridge Gillingham was a regular Friday night jaunt to Legends nightclub in the early 90's haha.

I have looked at a new Ridgeback Voyage today in Yeovil, hoping to go back tomorrow for a second look after reading some reviews.

I've been thinking of taking the train to North Devon and cycling the Tarka Trail for a weekend with some camping thrown in. If you ever want to get the train to Dorchester and cycle back to Gillingham let me know!

Cheers J
